I'm just a handlettering slash modern calligraphy person currently trying copperplate and penmanship. It took already 2 months since I practiced basic strokes consistency and rightaway I see the difference now! Now I like to handletter more with copperplate slant guide, dot grid or squared paper; and I've been addicted to this till I almost hate it to write on blank paper 😅🙈
Sounds like you have the right idea, get the basics down with exercises first before trying to write actual words. Hope you kept it up because after a year you should be quite good by now.

I’m 2 years late, but ideally you want to pick up speed. In F.W Tamblyn’s home instructor for penmanship, he requires that you learn the proper speed. As a result, your writing wouldn’t be stagnant and have its elegance while being fast.

Which one? The pen that wrote "Copperplate" in blue ink is a standard nib holder with a Zebra G nib. Holders can be anywhere from $5-35, depending on materials used, build quality, and features. Some right-handed people find it helpful to use an oblique nib holder when writing scripts. Most calligraphy nibs vary from $1-4 each, with Zebra G being at the cheaper end of the spectrum.

The best pens are that you already have. A foutain pen, ballpoint pen or a gel pen are great for cursive.
